Die Pfinz entspringt bei Straubenhardt im nördlichen Schwarzwald, schneidet anschließend das südliche Ende der Kraichgauer Hügellandschaft und verläuft ab Durlach im Oberrheingraben. Weiter nördlich mündet sie zusammen mit dem Saalbachkanal bei Rußheim in den Rhein.
Unterhalb von Grötzingen befindet sich das Hühnerlochwehr, an dem ein Teil des Pfinzwassers einem Hochwasser-Entlastungskanal zugeschlagen wird. In das ursprüngliche Bett der Pfinz unterhalb des Wehres, d.h. in den Ortsbereich Durlach, wird maximal ein Abfluss von 5 m³/s geleitet, der restliche Anteil wird über den Entlastungskanal direkt dem Rhein zugeführt. Bei Mittelwasser führt die Durlacher Pfinz 1 - 1,5 m³/s, der mittlere Niedrigwasserabfluss beträgt 0,54 m³/s (SPANG.FISCHER.NATZSCHKA 2003, S. 37).
Bei km 33+400 befindet sich die Obermühle, die seit 1992 wieder als Wasserkraftanlage mit historischem Mühlrad in Betrieb ist. Unterhalb der Obermühle verlaufen mit einigen Metern Abstand von der Böschungsoberkante Straßen am Gewässer entlang. Das Querprofil der Pfinz hat hier die Form eines gegenüber dem Gelände stark eingetieften Trapezes, das linksseitig aufgeweitet ist, um einem Fußweg Raum zu geben, der einen direkten Zugang zum Wasser ermöglicht. Auf der rechten Böschung wachsen Gehölze.
Die Anbindung der Pfinz an das öffentliche Wegenetz, in Form von Rad- und Fußwegen, ist durchgehend sehr gut, während direkte Zugangsmöglichkeiten nur in der Grünanlage unterhalb der Obermühle und oberhalb der Mühle stellenweise am rechten Ufer bestehen. Durch die sehr starke Eintiefung der Pfinz im Bereich direkt unterhalb der Obermühle ist die Erlebbarkeit dieses sehr attraktiven und charakteristischen Abschnittes eingeschränkt.

The Pfinz rises near Straubenhardt in the northern Black Forest, then cuts through the southern end of the Kraichgau hills and runs through the Upper Rhine rift valley from Durlach. Further north, it flows into the Rhine at Rußheim together with the Saalbach Canal.
Below Grötzingen is the Hühnerloch weir, where part of the Pfinz water is fed into a flood relief channel. A maximum discharge of 5 m³/s is fed into the original bed of the Pfinz below the weir, i.e. into the Durlach area, while the rest is fed directly into the Rhine via the relief channel. At mean water, the Durlach Pfinz carries 1 - 1.5 m³/s, the average low water discharge is 0.54 m³/s (SPANG.FISCHER.NATZSCHKA 2003, p. 37).
At km 33+400 is the Obermühle (Upper Mill), which has been in operation again since 1992 as a hydropower plant with a historic mill wheel. Below the Obermühle, roads run along the watercourse at a distance of a few meters from the upper edge of the embankment. The transverse profile of the Pfinz here has the shape of a trapezoid that is very deep compared to the terrain and is widened on the left-hand side to provide space for a footpath that allows direct access to the water. Woods grow on the right-hand embankment.
The connection of the Pfinz to the public path network, in the form of cycle paths and footpaths, is very good throughout, while direct access possibilities only exist in the green area below the Obermühle and above the mill in places on the right bank. Due to the very deep deepening of the Pfinz in the area directly below the Obermühle, the experience of this very attractive and characteristic section is limited.
