A derelict inn along an ancient route.
This building has not been lived in for over 130 years, but it is thought to have been an inn along the old Highway in the days before the modern (turnpike) roads in the valley bottoms. Anne Clifford (Countess of Pembroke) travelled along this route when she visited her castles which she restored at Skipton, Pendragon, Appleby, Brough and Brougham. She also built and restored churches and almshouses – all this between the ages of 60 and 86. This is one more cache along the old route, placed by kind permission of Liz at Yore House where there is a caravan and camping site. The cache is near to the footpath, and is not in the derelict building which is private property, so you explore at your own risk. (The missing cache at Cotter End will be replaced soon.) For those who are not travelling along the full length of the highway, footpaths lead here from various points along the B6259, but some can be rather muddy at times. The driest are via Shaws (GC1ZKN2) or up the new Pennine Bridleway from the Moorcock Inn (via GC2N2HG), but shorter indistinct paths near "Blades" are negotiable with care (or wellies).
