Geocache Description:

This Letterbox Hybrid has been placed in a Poseidon appropriate park setting with permission.

A half block south of 37th St. S., 5th Street turns into a parking lot for one of the city parks. The Letterbox Hybrid is very close to the parking lot. When you are at the hiding spot you will be able to use a compass to find that a heading of 84° leads to a crabapple tree. A heading of 139° points toward the southwest corner of the fence around the tennis court. Or standing at those two points and shooting back azimuths would pin-point the hiding spot.

Those without a compass or a compass feature on their GPSr could always just use the coordinates above and make a find that way. There is a stamp in the cache, but you will need to bring your own ink pad. If you have a personal stamp please stamp the log book when logging your find.

The Poseidon appropriate area of the park is near a wading pool. The pool is open from 1 o’clock until 7 o’clock on any summer day that meets the criteria of a temperature of 60° F with sunny skies or 65° F and no precipitation. A lot of attention was focused on me while I got directional headings for this Letterbox, searching for the container should not be done when the pool is in use. I even bumped the rate a little due to the possibility of having to make a return trip if the park is busy.

POSEIDON was the great Olympian god of the sea, rivers, flood and drought, earthquakes, and horses.
He was depicted as a mature man of sturdy build with a dark beard, and holding a trident.

Some of the more famous myths featuring the god include:--

The War of the Titanes where he fought beside Zeus and Hades to imprison the old gods in Tartaros;
The division of the cosmos amongst the sons of Kronos in which he received dominion over the sea;
The burying of Polybotes beneath the island of Kos in the giant war;
The sending of a sea-monster to punish the Trojans for refusing to pay him for building their walls;
The seduction of women such as Tyro, Amymone, Aithra and the Gorgon Medousa;
His contest with Athena for dominion of Athens in which he produced the first horse;
The persecution of Odysseus for the blinding of his son the Kyklops Polyphemos.

Original swag includes a toy whale, two small horses (the Greeks believed Poseidon created the first horse to impress Demeter) and two plastic firemen (they use water on the job).
