Hairy Monkey Nightmare Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Monkeyboy: Our area is now nearly devoid of caches worth hunting for. It has become not only difficult, but undesirable to maintain caches with a constant barrage of "needs archived" requests from newbie cacher, and what's worse is reviewers supporting their efforts by blindly archiving beloved QUALITY caches at the slightest provocation. So, after 12 years and 2000+ finds, it's time to say goodbye; it's no longer enjoyable to keep things going. As always, if you solve a puzzle of ours, feel free to claim a smiley - life is in the travels as well as the destinations.

Geocache Description:

Hidden with the permission of Dillon State Park.

This multi should be attempted at night.

Please note: The "area closed" signs are for the campgrounds only - THE PARK IS OPEN! We've been assured by the rangers that's it's OK to drive around the signs to access the area.

MAKE SURE TO SET A WAYPOINT FOR YOUR VEHICLE before hiking to the cache
to assist you in finding your way back in the dark!

Under the cloak of darkness, a cache awaits your discovery. Park at the posted coordinates and begin your journey with a descent into darkness...

Follow the stairwell at GZ to the lower camping area. Using a flashlight, locate pairs of white reflector tacks on the trees at the bottom of the stairwell; these are the markers you will be using to navigate your way along the winding trails and foothills that lie ahead. The final location will be well marked with red and white tacks (look for a large arrow), and there you will find an ammo can holding a log book, along with several "night" themed trade items.

   Suggestions for your adventure:

  • The park closes at 11:00pm and the hike should take roughly 1-2 hours, so please plan accordingly.
  • While (technically) this cache could be found in daylight, it is HIGHLY recommended at night (for obvious reasons)
  • Sturdy footwear is a MUST
  • LED flashlights seem to work best with the reflectors. Bring the brightest one (or more) you have available along with extra batteries
  • Carry water
  • Do not attempt this cache alone, or at the VERY LEAST make sure that someone is aware of your location
  • Use the trackback feature on your GPS (in case you lose your way in the dark), and set waypoints often (like one for the location of your car...!)

Once you have re-hidden the cache, follow the single red and white tacks along the trail to find the trail's exit. At the exit, the parking area is on the path to your right. MAKE SURE TO SET A WAYPOINT FOR YOUR VEHICLE before hiking to the cache to assist you with finding your way back in the dark!
