Geocache Description:

This cache is located on an island in Portsmouth Harbor, or as the locals call it, 'the back channel' of New Castle.  Snuff Box Island has the remnants of an old foundation and a chimney that can still be seen.

The location is beautiful to kayak.  The calm, shallow waters and unmarked underwater rocks lend to a peaceful paddle without worry of much motorboat traffic.

Beach your boat high on the gravely side of the island that faces the cemetery (east) in New Castle and scramble up the path to the old building foundation.  Finding this cache DOES NOT require wandering off the beaten paths, so that no brush needs to be trampled.  There are lots of scruffy low bushes but I have not seen poison ivy on this island (but lots of it on the other nearby islands).

The cache is a microcache.  Well, almost.  It's a blue waterproof container like the ones sold at beach shops and water parks to keep keys and a few dollars in.  Inside the cache there is a scroll of paper and a pen.  Please screw the cap on tightly to keep it watertight!

***The tide comes in and out quickly here.  If your boat is not pulled all the way up the beach, you could be stranded when your boats drift off when the tide comes in.**********
The location is beautiful and safe to kayak.  However, there is a current that goes from the Rt 1B bridge over the Piscataqua to the bridge near the Wentworth Hotel during tide changes, and this channel is a shortcut to the ocean for motor boat traffic.  If you rent a kayak from Portsmouth Kayak Adventures on Wentworth Rd in Rye, they will detail how to traverse this area safely.  If you are using your own kayak, there are several nice spots to put your boat in.  We use the boat launch on Goat Island (where The Kayak Launch geocache is hidden).  Peirce Island in Portsmouth is also popular.
