Geocache Description:

Mono Basin Paiute Indian ranch house on the west side of Highway 395. Park on shoulder just before reaching the cabin to find the cache container.

Ever since we were kids vacationing around "The Loop" and drivin' up and down 395, we've always wondered about this old abandoned cabin.

If you've ever bought a pumice scouring product, pumice bbq briquettes or Freatherrock landscaping rocks then most likely they came from the Frank Sam Mine located at the Mono Craters' Southern Coulee. In the early 1940's the U.S. Pumice Company leased the mine from Frank Sam and they continue to operate it today.

The Frank Sam Cabin is one of the last remaining structures from Bridgeport Tom's Farrington Ranch. Frank Sam was a descendent of Captain Sam who was one of the Yosemite-Mono Paiute leaders during the Mariposa Indian War. Captain Sam's daughters, Leanne and Louisa, were sister-wives of Bridgeport Tom. The sisters were known for their exquisite basket weaving. This house was built in the late 1920's and was occupied until the early 1960's.
