Geocache Description:

Orton Overlook: a series of 5 off-set caches on the gorgeous limestone scar above Orton.

The summit of Knott is a great viewpoint - a real 360° 'bowl' of distant hills, with limestone and meadows nearby. It has a trig point (in good condition) to mark this fine spot. There are good views over the wall into the nature reserve and Castle Folds - an ancient settlement which once occupied the tilted 'plinth'. The limestone pavement in the reserve is in much better condition than outside, where 'quarrying' has taken place over the years, either for making lime, general stone, or for ornamental garden stone.

The summit can be reached from either Hawthorn or Two Cairns caches, both of which contain the instructions for finding the true co-ordinates of the cache.  This means you can walk from either direction and find this cache. The co-ordinates above are for the trig point.  There are usually some handy pools near the trig which geo-hounds will enjoy on a warm day!

Take care moving over the limestone pavement.  It's great fun hopping from rock to rock, and you can almost go from Hawthorn to the trig without standing on grass - the last 50m are mostly tussocky grass as the soil and rock changes slightly.  There are occasional loose top layers on the clints (the upraised parts with the 'grikes' between) so a little care is needed.  The cache is also in a deep grike - don't fall in!

An erratic dawg!
