Night Monkeys Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Tree Trekker: Thanks to all who responded to the call for help and forged into the dark jungle in search of Dr. Simian and the (other!) apes. This was one of my favorite caches. Who knows, maybe some dark night we'll hear from them again.

Geocache Description:

In this half-mile multi-stage night cache, Dr. Isaac Simian needs your help capturing a runaway band of nocturnal chimpanzees — or does he?

Night Monkeys

Geocachers, I need your help! Several chimpanzees have escaped from the Fort Worth zoo! Their enclosure was accidentally left unlatched a few nights ago and they fled. Officials contacted me, Isaac M. Simian, Ph.D., an expert in primate behavior and communication. Using bloodhounds from the Tarrant County Sheriff's Department, I managed to track the apes from the zoo up the Trinity River to Fossil Creek, then up the creek to Fossil Creek Park, where they are currently hiding. It's not surprising they came here, where the deep, dark woods so resemble the thick forests of the Congo; however, the hounds will not track them into these woods because ... well, I'll explain later. No time now. The important thing is to locate and capture the chimps before they leave the area.

They will have to be found at night. These chimps are quite intelligent. They know they are being tracked, so they hide in the canopy during the daytime, only emerging at night to forage for food. I will be attempting to capture them tonight after dark, but need help. The woods are thick, dark, and wild, so I need someone who is skilled in navigating with a GPSr, and who can follow any markers and directions I may leave.

So far, I have tracked the chimps to a giant tree where they spent their first night. It is located a short hike from the posted coordinates -- a striped post beside the street at the best entry point into the woods. You can park near this post (pull completely off the road) or at the parking lot 300 yards to the west. To reach the tree, hike north into the woods from the post. The tree is located at N 32° 48.891; W 097° 15.034.

If I am unable to wait for you there, I will blaze a trail for you to follow using white reflective markers. From the west side of the great tree, shine your flashlight into the forest and follow the trail of glowing markers. I will leave more information and further written instructions concealed close to the base of a large tree near a red reflective marker. When you reach the red marker, be sure to look for these instructions before continuing to follow the white reflectors.

If I have to keep moving, I'll continue to leave instructions on how to follow. Sometimes I may leave markers, sometimes I may just provide you with further GPS coordinates, and sometimes I may do both. My instructions may get rather detailed, so be sure to bring something to make notes on, and of course a good flashlight. Also, be sure to bring water and wear long pants – there's some poison ivy out here.

Please come. And hurry!

Park closes at 11 p.m.
Congratulations to TX wino for FTF!
