Art and music have always been x's two great passions. He was brought up in a council house in Yiewsley, Middlesex, the third son of the tow barge-living Romany gypsies, Arthur and Elizabeth, and the first of their family to be born on dry land. ‘My mother did crochet, my dad played the piano and sang; he was like an old music hall character,’ he says. X's two older brothers set up a band in the back room of the house, and x’s first live performance was playing the washboard for them; and when he was about ten they went to Ealing College of Art. ‘They’d come back from college with these nude drawings that they’d done in life classes. I thought to myself, “ that looks like a good job!”’
