For a look at the old and the modern, take a visit to Waitaha pa, a few kilometres up river from Wanganui. Best done on a fine day, you may be lucky enough to be on top of the hill as the MV Waimarie puffs its way by
Parking S 39°53.34 E175°05.36
Look for the signpost on the right 5.9km from the Dublin Street Bridge along SH4.
There is ample parking available although geocachers travelling up from Wanganui should drive past the entrance to the pa and turn around using one of the road intersection 500 metres or so beyond the site so they approach the parking area from the north. Please do not block the farm gates.
The route up to Waitaha Pa is posted and marked with orange triangles and there are a couple of stiles across the fences. It involves a short but steep climb to the top. I suggest that you wear boots or sturdy footwear as it can be slippery after rain and in winter. A stick would also be handy.The way up!
For an easier climb to the top and plenty of time to explore the site (and watch the world go by) allow a good 60 – 90 minutes.

Waitahai is a ridge top Pa which was occupied about 200 or more years ago.
It had several advantages
- Steep sided nature of the ridge
- Close proximity to the river for food and transport route
Double ditch –and-bank were constructed at either end of the pa and they were topped with wooden palisades. The entrances were narrow confined. High fighting platforms were built in the middle.
Inside were houses for families, food stores and cooking shelters. The kumera storage pits are still evident.
This special spot with its great views and peaceful outlook is a good spot to relax on a summer evening watch the sun go down.
The cache is a bullet camouflaged . . It has a strip log.Please take a pen or pencil for signing the log. .
