Geocache Description:

Cache is a magnetic nano.  BYOP. Cache location is wheelchair accessible, but assistance will be required to reach it, as it is at 1956 high jump world record height.

There is plenty of parking beside the cache . Cherryvale Playing Fields are operated by Belfast City Council, and normal daylight opening hours apply.  (See website for details.)

Inspired by London 2012, we decided to place this cache on the day of the Closing Ceremony. Very few people know that a world record was set in this wee park way back in 1956. Please visit the plaque that commemorates the event at the changing rooms.

Thelma Hopkins (born 16 March 1936) is a Northern Irish athlete, who competed in the high and the long jump.
On 5 May 1956 she broke the world record in high jump in Belfast with a jump of 1.74 meters. Her record was broken on 14 July 1956 in Bucharest by Iolanda Balaş of Romania.
Her achievement in breaking the world record is commemorated by a plaque in Cherryvale Playing Fields, South Belfast.
She competed for Great Britain in the 1956 Summer Olympics held in Melbourne, Australia in the high jump event, where she won the silver medal jointly with Maria Pisareva. In the 1954 Commonwealth Games she won a gold medal.
