Geocache Description:

[EN] Selimbar monument

Selimbar Monument is located at the exit of Sibiu, towards Ramnicu Valcea. The ensemble of the monument is formed by an obelisk, a cemetery and a bit away, a triptych.

The Obelisk was built in 1932, with double commemoration: for the memory of the soldiers of Mihai Viteazul (battle of 1599) and for those killed in this area in WWI. The Obelisk is 3.70 m high and is built of concrete. It has as ornament a Romanian helmet, representing solediers in attack, in bold relief.

The symbolical cemetery is located around the Obelisk, represented by stone crosses dedicated to those unknown warriors killed in 1916-1918. In the cemetery there were buried 33 Romanian soldiers and 8 Austrians, killed in the Battle of Sibiu of 13/26-15/28 September 1916. Hard to be maintained, later it was built a crypt unde the altar of the church in Selimbar, while in spring 1932 the bones of the heroes have been moved here. The same year it was built the obelisk by the "Societarea Cultul Eroilor Jamboreea".

The wooden triptych has been built in 1925 by the "Astra" company, on the area named "Movila lui Mihai" and has as symbol the victory of Mihai Viteazul of 1599. The triptych has been refurbished in 1988-1989, higher and more visible.
