English can be a difficult language to learn. Part of the challenge are the acronyms and abbreviations which are frequently used. For many, it is easier to learn english if the first language (L1) is closely related. For example, german matches english closer than chinese does. Syntax and word usage is difficult to master as well. A skilled translator must deal with word substitution as well as proper phrasing to be sure the intent of a message is captured, not simply changing the words from one language to another.
