Geocache Description:

Questa cache vuole ricordare i fatti del 26 giugno 1959, data infausta per Olgiate Olona e per tutta Italia. Un incidente aereo che, all’epoca dei fatti, fu il peggiore mai accaduto su suolo italiano e che costò la vita a 70 persone.
Il volo TWA n° 891, proveniente da Atene, decollò alle ore 17:28 del 26 giugno 1959, durante un violento nubifragio, dall'Aeroporto di Malpensa, diretto all'Aeroporto di Parigi-Orly e a Chicago. Alle ore 17:30 il velivolo comunicò la propria posizione al Radiofaro di Saronno per poi sparire dai radar alle ore 17:33, quando venne colpito da un fulmine che causò l'esplosione del carburante ed il conseguente cedimento strutturale. L’aereo si schiantò in località Cascina Agnese, Olgiate Olona, in provincia di Varese.
Nonostante il pronto intervento di soccorritori sul luogo del disastro, non vennero ritrovati superstiti tra le 69 persone a bordo.
70 vittime quando a bordo c’erano solamente 69 persone?
Fra i vari corpi, o meglio resti di corpi, fu trovato anche quello di un bambino maschio di circa 2 anni.
Il mistero non è mai stato chiarito. Poteva essere un minore a bordo non registrato. Qualcuno aveva ipotizzato che il corpo era quello di un bambino di Olgiate Olona che stava giocando in giardino al momento della caduta dei rottami dell’aereo. Ma nessuno ha mai segnalato la scomparsa di un bambino del luogo, come pure nessuno ha mai segnalato la presenza a bordo dell’aereo di un minore non registrato.
Il comune posò sul luogo del disastro una lapide provvisoria, sostituita nel 1964 da un monumento: una sorta di ala bianca di calcestruzzo, sollevata da terra, con una croce stilizzata. Il monumento è stato restaurato nel 1993. Al centro è incastonata una piastrella in ceramica, su cui è dipinto il ritratto di Mary Belknap, una delle vittime più giovani della sciagura (10 anni).

The TWA Flight No. 891, from Athens, took off at 17:28 on 26 June 1959, during a violent storm, from Malpensa, Paris-Orly Airport Direct and Chicago. At 17:30 the aircraft communicated its position to the beacon of Saronno before disappearing from radar at 17:33, when he was struck by lightning that caused the explosion of the fuel and the consequent structural failure. The plane crashed in a village Agnes House, Olgiate Olona, near Varese.
Despite rapid response team of rescuers to the disaster site, no survivors were found among the 69 people on board.
70 people on board when there were only 69 people?
Among the various bodies, or rather the remains of bodies, was also found that of a male child of about 2 years.
The mystery has never been clarified. It could be a minor on board is not registered. Someone had suggested that the body was that of a child who was playing Olgiate Olona in the garden at the time of the fall of the wreckage. But no one has ever reported the disappearance of a child's place, as well as no one has ever reported the presence on board of a child is not registered.
The municipality placed a plaque at the crash site temporary, replaced in 1964 by a monument, a sort of wing white concrete, off the ground, with a stylized cross. The monument was restored in 1993. At the center is set with a ceramic tile, on which is painted a portrait of Mary Belknap, one of the youngest victims of the disaster (10 years).
