Geocache Description:

In 1941, Argentia was selected to be the location of a U.S. Naval Base due to the secure deepwater anchorage offered by the adjoining harbours, as well as the existing railway line and the correct topography for an airfield.  The base was urgently needed as part of the trans-Atlantic supply line that linked North America to Britain in order to protect shipping from German U-boats. The base remained operational until it was decommissioned and officially closed in 1994.

Nowadays, only remnants of the once flourishing community are left standing. Although many buildings have been demolished,
this Geocache is tucked away in one of the few remaining bunkers visible along the coastline.

Bringing a flashlight is highly recommended.
