Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed as part of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri's Centennial Geocaching Project "Caching In On Our Legacy" celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the USA.

The Crystal City Scout House has been in use since 1926.

This cache is NOT located inside the building and is best accessed during daylight hours. Parking is available outside the fence.

Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low began Girl Scouting in Savannah GA on March 12, 1912. In 1918 the first troop in the St Louis area was organized. Troop 1 in Crystal City was formed by Miss Ethel Holdinghaus on February 26, 1926. The troop met here in the  house. Troop 1's flag has been framed and is placed above the door of the building. Today the Crystal City Scout House is owned by the Crystal City School District and is still used and maintained by the Girl Scouts in District 10.
The house itself was built from wood packing crates that had been used to ship heavy equipment from England to the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company in Crystal City. So there is a connection to glass production and the cache name reflects that connection. The house was first built and used as a kindergarten prior to 1926 when Miss Holdinghaus's troop began using it.
In 1948 the St Louis Council adopted the official name Girl Scout Council of Greater St Louis, which in 1954 merged with the legacy Ozark Council to include Washington, St Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Iron and Madison Counties.
In 1956 the independent troops in Jefferson County including Crystal City, Festus and DeSoto joined the Girl Scout Council of Greater St Louis. By this time the council owned two camps, Cedarledge (1926-27) and Fiddlecreek (1956).
Many thanks to James Anderson, Lonnie Williams, Jan Gebhardt, Karen Olten and the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri's Historical Collections Advisory Group for help with this cache and our Girl Scout history.

The Girl Scouts would like to thank David McDowell, Director of Technology at the Crystal City School District for granting us permission to place this cache.
