Bird Island Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

blackdogsMT: I just don't see me getting out to the Island anytime soon. Our boat is not running so I am regrettfully archiving this cache. It's been a good run. Maybe someone else will get FWP permission and place a new cache on it in the future. Thanks to everyone who found it.

Geocache Description:

This island is closed to the public during waterfowl nesting March 1 to June 15 each year. This cache is placed on the "real" Bird Island of Flathead Lake.  Bird Island lies off the tip of Finley Point, Polson, MT. Cache has signed approval from MT FWP.

Beach your boat / jet ski / canoe or sea kayak on one of two gravel beach area's on the South end of the island. Follow coordinates a short ways into the interior of the island. Coordinates are averaged and the best we could get due to tree cover. This island is a favorite of ours for the past six or seven years to beach at on hot summer days to enjoy this beautiful lake we are so lucky enough to call home.

FWP bought Bird Island in 1954 as a waterfowl sanctuary and since then it has been enjoyed by the public for recreating and camping. Per FWP, Bird Island does allow overnight stays via tent on the few spots w/o the dense vegetation around the perimeter. No open fires allowed on Bird Island but camp stoves for cooking are allowed. This island is closed to the public during waterfowl nesting March 1 to June 15 each year.

You will need your own writing utensil for this cache, although it is not a nano nor a bison tube. But something similar however a bit larger. Check the hint if you really need to know more about what and where to look.

Be sure to also grab the cache named "Pirates of Bird Island" while in this area too. (Just a note however, that cache is NOT on the real "BIRD ISLAND", if you look at Flathead Lake maps, the small horseshoe shaped island that cache is on that is south of Bird Island is really called "BARE BELLY" island). These islands are just a short distance from each other.

Here are a couple good links to info about Flathead Lake facts as well as a Marine Trail of non-motorized routes between the islands of Flathead Lake.
