Geocache Description:

Haunted or not haunted... who knows? I do enjoy the history and architecture of these places.

Pleasant Ridge Cemetery - Lewis Bottoms Cemetery

Haunt #13 is very fitting for the graveyard commonly known as '13 Steps Cemetery'.  This location is featured in the book "The Iowa Road Guide to Haunted Locations" and also makes the list of the Top Five Spooky Sites in Iowa by author, Chad Lewis.

The Linn County community of Palo is home to the Pleasant Ridge cemetery, which is not only reportedly haunted by a phantom dog but also has a step — on a set of stairs leading up to the cemetery gate — that only appears at night. “It is very strange,” Lewis said. “During the daytime only 12 steps are visible. But at night you can see 13 steps.”

Visitors to the cemetery report seeing a phantom dog. Voices have been recorded on tape(EVP) that were not heard while there. Also, people have been touched by unseen things. Visitors have seen things, human like shapes, appear and disappear. There are also reports of strange colored lights through out the cemetery. Some have reported seeing a phantom house that appears and disappears.

This cache is a good distance from the actual cemetery grounds, due to proximity of another cache in the area.  It is located at the point where you turn onto the access road.  There's a paved parking area and you can either walk a short trail through the grass or up the road to get to the actual cemetery... if you dare!
