Geocache Description:

If you have walked up from the Pareraho Pa site (GC3V3EJ) you will have passed through some lovely bush, including enormous manuka trees and a veritable carpet of rewarewa seedlings.

Unfortunately we could not put this cache where we wanted to because of its proximity to another recent cache (GC3TZ87). However the cache is placed at the first significant sign of the Hairy Legs!

If you walk on another 20 metres or so from where we have placed this cache, you will be in among the Hairy Legs. This has to be one of the most magical places we have come across in a while. We hope you will see what we mean when you get there. Once you arrive, take a moment to stand in silence…perhaps those hairy legs will reveal themselves to be Ent legs!

At the far end of the stand of Hairy Legs is the Headwall Scarp of a landslide which may date to the 1855 Wairarapa Earthquake.  The cache itself is a half-litre camoed Sistema container. Sorry - forgot to include a pencil so bring your own!

Getting there:

Speedy’s Reserve is located at the bottom of Major Drive in Kelson. There is parking at the gateway to the reserve for no more than two cars, or park on the road further down Major Drive ( just up from the intersection on to SH2). You could also catch the Kelson bus (150) which stops just below the entry to Speedys. Walk down around the gate and look out for the orange blazes just into the bush. As you continue to follow the orange blazes you will reach Belmont Stream which you have to cross twice, so there is a potential for wet feet. After the second crossing, the path continues up from here on your right. The path is well blazed with the orange blazes but the first part gets very narrow at times with steep drops down into a gorge on the left hand side. The entire path is also very slippery in places, so you will require good walking boots. We recommend you also let someone know where you are going. Keep following the orange blazes. At the first T junction turn left. Majestic Hairy Legs is about 20 minutes beyond.
