Cachehuntin1,
for the “First to Find”: IM BC “Enyart” Mound.
MAXRAYS says, “Bravo!!!”
This is one of my growing list of geoCaches that I have placed to take you to the site of a prehistoric Ohio indian mound. The name refers to #13 on page 132 of "Indian Mounds of the Middle Ohio Valley (2002)."
The Enyart Mound is in the Indian Creek Preserve, which has now reopened after some renovations. The secondary entrance is off of Springfield Road, south of the Springdale Cemetery. Since there are currently four geoCaches around and in the preserve, I have placed this cache near the entrance.
A reconstructed mound in Butler County, Ohio. This mound shows a typical method of modern reconstruction of an earthen mound, following a dig. This mound was drastically diminished in height by plowing from the 1860's through the 1930's. It was described as being 6 feet in height in an 1878 survey, but it was reduced to a mere 2 feet in height by the early 1900's. It was partially excavated in 1971. Following the dig, Miami University replaced soil and added more to reconstruct the original 1870's description and protect the unexcavated portions. The mound is on highlands overlooking Indian Creek and the village of Reily, but a second growth forest obscures some of the view during the summer months. The mound is about a quarter mile down a nature trail leading through a planted pine wood forest. (There is a parking lot with a picnic area, shelter house, and toilets. To park in the preserve, you will need to pay a fee. You could park in the Springdale Cemetery and walk to the entrance.)
