To celebrate the creation of this section of the Haggis Highway events will take place on 5th, 6th and 7th October 2012.
The events are as follows:
Wick ~ Bar Blether GC3PQ71 - Friday 5th October from 19:00
Wick ~ Dinner GC3PQ89 - Saturday 6th October from 17:00
Dunbeath ~ Lunch GC3PQ8R - Sunday 7th October 10:00~12:00
Gartymore - Garstiemhor (the big field)
The small crofting township of Gartymore near Helmsdale, was created at the beginning of the 19th century at the time of the Clearances, when hundreds of families were forcibly removed by the House of Sutherland from their native straths.
The people were allocated tiny pieces of land at Gartymore and had to build their own houses, work the boggy land and somehow survive on the steep hillsides. It was hoped that they would take up fishing but they did not. They continued to live as crofters.
Today at Gartymore there are over 50 ruined crofts
