FSC-2012 Tussock Pond

Cache Details:
Cache is located just a short walk from the parking area.

Tussock Pond, a popular Sussex County fishing destination, covers 8.6 acres near Portsville.

Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife website provides the following info:

Fluctuating water levels in this pond in recent years have impacted bass reproduction and caused a decline in the number of fish available. Dense hydrilla coverage has also affected the fish population. A supplemental stocking of 400 largemouth bass fingerlings have positively impacted the bass population but fluctuating water levels have not maintained that. Most bass are in the 12 to 15 inch size range and exhibit good weights.

Bluegill are abundant with peak numbers in 3 to 5 inch and seven-inch fish. Average weights are within normal ranges. Low numbers of black crappie and pumpkinseed sunfish were noted. Chain pickerel were abundant in spring 2012 with many in the 3 to 4-inch size range indicating a strong year-class. Creek chubsuckers, a native species, were more abundant here than any of the other ponds.

VEGETATION
Hydrilla has been present over a majority of the pond bottom since 1999 with periodic herbicide applications used for control. The conditions in spring 2012 were good with little hydrilla present.

SPECIAL CONDITION
As noted above, the water level of this pond drops substantially during very dry summers and occasionally makes the boat ramp unusable. Check for fishing closures if the water level remains low.
