This easy, multi-stage puzzle was placed to celebrate my son attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, and connects two Boy Scout Eagle projects in Montgomery Park, the second of which is his.
Montgomery Park, in Montgomery Township, NJ, boasts miles of paved and unpaved trails for walking, hiking and biking. Here you will find picnic pavillions, a playground, softball and soccer fields, basketball courts, meadows, streams and an arboretum to explore, and lots of wildlife in acres of hardwood and cedar woods. Utilizing one of the pavillions, this geocache could easily be an exciting activity around which a Patrol or Cub Scout Den meeting could be planned; introducing the scouts to geocaching.
Boy Scouts could also easily incoorperate several advancement requirements during such a meeting;
Tenderfoot 5: safe hiking
Tenderfoot 9: buddy system
Tenderfoot11: Poisonous plants
Second Class 1: map & compass
Second Class 2a: troop/patrol activity
Second Class 5: 10 wild animals
First Class 3: troop/patrol activity
First Class 6: 10 native plants
And of course, several outdoor/nature-themed merit badge requirements.
The published coodinates will take you to the first stage and will introduce you to the first outdoor Eagle Service Project from Montgomery Township's newest Boy Scout Troop. It was a "sign" of great things to come, from this troop. To complete the second stage, solve this number puzzle;
Troop # = ab
N40 26.ba9
Wa4 39.03b
Speaking of numbers...after a few years, this troop rechartered with a new sponsor and was renumbered, so while it might seem that they originated from different troops, both of these projects came from the same set of Scouts. By solving the next number puzzle, you will be able to project a waypoint to the final and find the cache. You could use a compass, if you have one.
Troop # = cde
Direction = (c/4) e e magnetic
Distance = First troop #
The actual cache is a green ammo box which has been filled with several patches from Scouting events. There is minimal off-trail "bushwacking"...but check for ticks, all the same! Be Prepared!
"Do a Good Turn Daily"...take some trash to a trashcan, please.
