Geocache Description:

Cache is located in the Valley View Nature Preserve. Entrance from the main road to the preserve is shared with the school just take the dirt drive just past the school parking lot and park at the entrance to the preserve. Placed with permission by the Valley View Board. You are looking for of course the Green Monster not too far off the trail, I suggest you take the trail from "splendid splinter" along the river. Please replace cache exactly as found so it doesn't disappear again.

The Green Monster is the nickname for the thirty-seven foot, two-inch high left field wall in Fenway Park home of the Boston Red Sox. I had the pleasure of making my first trip to see the Green Monster in person this season and it inspired me to create a cache in honor of this historic baseball icon.

Fenway Park was built in 1912 and “the Wall” as it was called then was part of the original structure. It wasn’t actually painted green until 1947. Before then it was covered with advertisements. Several ballparks built in that era featured high fences hiding the field from external viewers in areas of the outfield where bleacher seating was non-existent. Also due to the Wall’s relatively close distance from home plate (310 feet down the left field line) it served to reduce “cheap” home runs hit to left field. Fenway is the last of the exceptionally high-walled major league ballparks.
