Geocache Description:

The phrase "Seeing the Elephant" began to be commonly used by the hundreds of thousands of emigrants and gold seekers who made the difficult and perilous 2000 mile covered wagon journey to California between 1841 and 1869. It referred to the challenges, terrible hardships, and life-threatening dangers they faced during their long three month journey and in the gold fields that were difficult to describe.

ADA compliant trails allow easy access to a great area for visitors. Be sure to explore, but be respectful of the area. This cache is placed with permission but is only available during posted hours at the California Trail Interpretive Center. Take time to visit the Center and see the elephant! For more information, visit http://www.californiatrailcenter.org/.
