Geocache Description:

CONTAINER TYPE: Magnetic Keyholder

Welcome to the Team Trunk Monkey Turnpike - "TTMT"
This series of caches runs along this stretch of 4-lane road, which features a wide paved shoulder along it's entire course. These caches will all be on the South / East side of the road. There will be caches of several different sizes and types, and the hiding spots will vary in difficulty and terrain, as the locations allow. As such, several of these caches will have you walking through tall grass & looking through vegetation. During the "tick season" it is highly recommended to use a quality insect repellent, and as always if it is sunny out, use a good sunblock too.

Kuhl's Owl Monkey
(Aotus infulatus)

MORPHOLOGY:
Kuhl's owl monkey has a grooming claw on the fourth digit of both feet. Members of the genus Aotus are the only nocturnal New World primate. The legs of this species are longer than the arms, which assists in leaping. Kuhl's owl monkey has large eyes, but lacks the tapetum typical of the nocturnal prosimians. The average body mass for this species is 0.8 kilograms, and no difference exists in body mass between males and females. This species is part of the red-necked group. Kuhl's owl monkey has an interscapular whorl. This species has a pelage color which is gray to brownish agouti on the dorsal side and the ventral side is orange on the neck down to chest.

RANGE:
Kuhl's owl monkey is found in East-central Brazil. The most common forest type this species is found in is secondary forests.

ECOLOGY:
Kuhl's owl monkey is a frugivorous species that also eats leaves and insects. Kuhl's owl monkey prefers to eat small ripe fruit. An advantage of foraging at night is decreased competition from diurnal frugivores and the presence of larger nocturnal insects. This species spends all of its life up in the trees. Kuhl's owl monkey becomes more active when the moon is bright, and they travel the same route during the night, so they may memorize routes when they travel when the moon is brighter. In some parts of the range this species exhibits diurnal activity. Diurnal activity might result in this species because of a lack of avian predators and the lack of titi monkeys, Callicebus, as competitors for food. The mean group size for Kuhl's owl monkey is 4.0 individuals. This species will use Orbignya sp. as sleeping sites when found in the Zona dos Cocais habitat type.

LOCOMOTION:
Kuhl's owl monkey moves through the forest quadrupedally in the trees, but also can leap from tree to tree.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR:
The basic group of Kuhl's owl monkeys is composed of a breeding pair and their offspring. This species has a monogamous mating system. The monogamous mating system is correlated with having males present to help raise offspring and having food resources in predictable, uniform patches. Both males and females disperse in this species. The young stay with their birth group until between 2.5 and 3.5 years old, then they disperse. Social grooming is not common for members of this genus. In this species the father becomes the main carrier of the infant and only gives the infant to the mother to suckle.
