Under Bass Wood Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Bean & Sprout: It seems that the public access, which was agreed for 10 years, has now ceased.
The area has been fenced off and Bass Wood is no longer available for the public to explore and enjoy.
And so I have no choice but to archive this cache.

Thanks to all those who took the time to explore and find this cache.

Geocache Description:

This is multi-cache designed as a walk around Bass Wood.
This privately owned site was created from farmland with grant aid from the Forestry Commission and allows for permissive public access.

When accessing the suggested parking, take care at the level crossing just beyond the station entrance; there are no barriers here, only lights.

Please note that access to this new wood can be a bit boggy and you have to climb over a stile.

Bass Wood is a new woodland site and has been recently planted with a range of mostly native species.  There is public access over permissive paths, please refer to the sign in the car park.

Even as a new woodland of saplings, there is plenty to see.  Various birds, bats, bees and butterflies, as well as other wildlife can be found here.  When in leaf, see if you can recognise examples of all the species of tree planted on the site which include oak, hazel, lime and ash.  Details of the full list of tree species planted are provided on the board.

Hares and woodpeckers have been spotted here, as well as the usual mix of tits and finches which are easy to see as the trees are still small. Dragonflies are plentiful on sunny summer days. If you have never been to a new wood, then this one is worth a visit.  Do come back to see how it changes and develops over the years.

The co-ordinates are for free parking at the small car park.  Here you will find space for 2-4 cars (depending on how you park).  Alternatively pay and display parking can be found at Althorne Station.

There is a notice board in the car park with a map on it showing the network of mown paths and seating.  You will need to obtain some information at the car park, and then further on within the wood, in order to find the cache itself.

All of the stages and the final location are within the Bass Wood site. If your calculations take you outside the site then you have miscalculated.

To locate the cache you need to follow the various stages looking for answers as you go. There are 4 stages in all to reach the final hiding place.

STAGE 1 - START - Find the following information at the carpark:

A = The number of green sections depicted on the map
B = Benches, as shown on the map
C = Number of stiles marked on the map
D = How many different species of native tree have been planted in Bass Wood
E = Number of holes in the sleeper on the left of the stile, as viewed from the car park side only.
F = Cross the stile and face the carpark. Count the number of holes in the sleeper to the right of the stile, as viewed from this side only. The number you need is half of this.

Use these answers to find a gate at N 51 38.A(B+F)(E+F) E 000 45.(C+C)A(D/2)

STAGE 2 - GATE - find the following numbers here:

G = Number of small squares on each horizontal row of the wire grill here
H = The number of small squares in each verticle column of the wire grill here
J = Ignoring the grill and the bolt, how many rectangular sections make up the gate (this should be an odd number and is a double digit)
K = Half of G
L = Half of H

Use these answers to find somewhere to sit at N 51 38.(GxJ)+G+K-L E 000 45.((L+J)x(G-H))+K

STAGE 3 - BENCHES - find the following numbers here:

M = Total number of benches here
N = Total number of planks on each bench
P = Total number of 'legs' used to make all the seating here

Use these answers to find a corner post at N 51 38.(M+N+P)(NxN)P E 000 45.(M+N+N)(M-N+P)(M+N)

STAGE 4 - CORNER - Walk broadly northwards from here towards the gate looking for the following numbers as you go (DO NOT GO THROUGH THE GATE):

R = Starting at the corner and ignoring the others, count the total number of the fence posts along here which are made from cut down telegraph poles
When you reach the gate look for the following numbers:
S = Number of words on the 4th line of the 'Stop Look Listen' sign
T = Number of words on the 5th line of this sign
U = Total number of letter that make up the words of the 5th line of this sign
V = The gate is made up of several verticle slats. How many are pointed at the top?

Use these answers to find the cache at N 51 38.(S+V)RS E 000 45.R(V+S-U)T
