PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH THE CACHE FROM THE SIDEWALK AND ACROSS THE LAWN. Please use the boardwalk close to the house. The landlord is aware the cache has been placed.
This cache was originally hidden while vacationing in BC for Punkie's Birthday. My dad and I hid it the night before and GeoKid went out to find it the morning of her birthday. Due to technical difficulties, the cache couldn't remain hidden were it was and we brought it back home to Ontario :)
After looking for a suitable spot, we realized what great history lies right out our front door!!
Prior to being incorporated as the Village of Burlington in 1873, the area you are now standing in was part of the Village of Freeman.
Freeman Village was named after Joshua Freeman who, in 1816 came to what was then Upper Canada from Nova Scotia. The Freeman Family were farmers who also operated a toll road along part of the road from Hamilton to the Village of York (now Toronto). By turn of the century, Freeman had its own railway station, hardware store, basket factory, chemical company, a general store, a boarding house, and a post office which had its own postmark until 1952. Freeman Village was located along Brant Street and Plains Road area. A few of the houses still remain, including the one this cache is hidden at and its neighbour to the left.
The House dates pre 1910. The original house was one storey. The second floor and the extension on the back were added at some point later on.
The cache is not meant to be difficult and should be rather quick to locate.
PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH THE CACHE FROM THE SIDEWALK ACROSS THE LAWN!! Rather, park your car and approach the cache from the boardwalk in front of the house. The owner of the property is aware of the cache and very supportive.
There are businesses which are open during the day.
FTF gets a cup of coffee on us. Also, we've placed Punkie's Bday TB in the cache to send it off :)
