Regentes Emma
Adelheid Emma Wilhelmina Theresia, Prinses van Waldeck-Pyrmont, was de tweede vrouw van Koning Willem III van 1879, tot aan de dood van Koning Willem III in 1890. Omdat haar dochter, de latere Koningin Wilhelmina bij het overlijden van haar vader te jong was, werd Emma regentes van Nederland van 1890 tot 1898. Gedurende die periode nam zij het Koninklijk gezag waar.
In de tijd dat Emma regentes was, zette ze zoveel mogelijk de lijn van haar overleden man door, maar zocht wel meer contact met ‘het volk’. Zo had zij elke 14 dagen een ontmoeting met de ministers, en stond zij erop zoveel mogelijk post zelf open te maken en af te handelen. Daarnaast nam zij meer momenten om mensen te ontvangen die haar wilde spreken. Dat deed zij zowel op Paleis ’t Loo in Apeldoorn, als op Paleis Soestdijk in Baarn. Gedurende haar Regentschap kreeg zij 3 keer te maken met een kabinetsformatie.
Park De Kieviet
Van oudsher waren er in dit deel van Wassenaar een groot aantal landgoederen. Rond 1900 bleken de kosten voor het behoud van deze landgoederen zo op te lopen, dat een groot aantal werd verdeelt in kleinere, of werd verkavelt voor de bouw van villawijken. Zo ook landgoed “Groot Haesebroek”. De villawijk “De Kieviet” is ontstaan in het zuidelijke deel van dit voormalige landgoed. Prentbriefkaarten als onderstaande werden uitgegeven om mensen bekend te maken met deze nieuwe wijk.
Compleet
De wijk werd van alle gemakken voorzien, met onder andere een kerk, een postkantoor, een tankstation en een café-restaurant. In de beginjaren was er zelf een paardentram die bezoekers en bewoners direct van Den Haag naar het centrum van deze wijk bracht. Ook liep het tracé van de inmiddels opgeheven “Gele tram” door deze wijk. Al deze voorzieningen, en de verbeterde bereikbaarheid van deze wijk, maakte hem zeer gewild onder de nieuwe bewoners. Landgoed
Iets noordelijk ligt nog steeds een landgoed “Groot Haesebroek”, met een groot huis erop. Dit is echter een fractie van wat het landgoed ooit was. Het oude landhuis, te zien op onderstaande foto uit 1910, werd door het echtpaar Kröller-Möller afgebroken, om plaatst te maken voor een moderne variant. Hun plan was dan ook om van het hele landgoed een museum voor beeldende kunst te maken. Dit hebben ze aanvankelijk ook wel gedaan, maar besloten later om dit museum te vestigen in Otterlo. Echter, gedurende deze tijd had het landgoed de status van Rijksmuseum. Tegenwoordig is dit de residentie van de Canadese ambassade.

Lady Governor Emma
Adelheid Emma Wilhemina Theresia, Princess of Waldeck-Pyrmnot, was the second wife of King Willem III from 1879 untill the death of King Willem III in 1890. Because her daughter, the future Queen Wilhelmina was too Young at the time of her father’s passing, Emma became Lady Governor of The Netherlands from 1890 till 1898. During this period she managed the Kingdom of The Netherlands.
In the time Emma was Lady Governor, she tried to rule in the spirit of her late husband as much as possible. However, she did wanted more contact with “the people”. She had a meeting with the members of her goverment every forthnight, and insisted on reading and answering as much mail personally. She also scheduled more time to meet and speak to people who wanted to have an audience. She did this on Paleis ’t Loo in Apeldoorn, as well as on Paleis Soestdijk in Baarn. During her reign she faced 3 cabinet formations.
Park De Kieviet
In earlier days the were a number of large estates in this part of Wassenaar. Around 1900 the costs to maintain these estates grew so much, it was hard to maintain them as a whole. Therefore, a number of large estates were split up into smaller one, and parts were parceled for the building of villas and so creating whole new neighbourhoods. The large estate “Groot Haesebroek” was no exception. The neighbourhood “De Kieviet” (The Peewit) was created in the southern part of this former estate. Picture postcards to make people familiar with the new neighbourhood and attract buyers were made, such as the following.
Complete
The neighbourhood was made complete with all necessary requirement. A church, a postoffice, a petrol station and a café-restaurant. In the early years there was a horse drawn tram giving visitors and residents a direct link from the neighbourhood to The Hague city center. Later they replaced this horse drawn tram by a electric one, called the “Yellow Tram”. This again was later shut down. All these facilities made the neighbourhoods a desirable place to live. The Estate
A bit to the north one can still find an estate named “Groot Haesebroek”, complete with a large mansion. This is however just a small part of what the estate used to be. The old mansion, shown here on a picture dated 1910, was demolished by the Kröller-Möller family, only to be replaced by a more modern one. Their plan was to turn the entire estate into an museum of fine arts. They started it at this location, but later decided to move to Otterlo, where it still can be found. This museum is nowadays one of The Netherlands most famous museums and known throughout the World for its collection. During the period the museum was in Wassenaar, the estate was a National Museum. Nowadays it is the residence of the Canadian ambassador to The Netherlands.
