Geocache Description:

The historic Albert Pike school and Crawford County Courthouse:

Albert Pike (1809-1891) is remembered as a Confederate brigadier general, a prolific writer and poet, and past Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite's Southern Jurisdiction of Freemasonry. In 1832-33, he taught students in a one-room schoolhouse in Crawford County, Arkansas. This circa 1820 structure is one of the oldest standing buildings in Arkansas and is now located in a preserved state on the grounds of the Crawford County Courthouse in Van Buren.

The Crawford County Courthouse is listed in the National Historic Registry. Originally constructed in 1842, this courthouse is the oldest continuously operating county courthouse west of the Mississippi River. The clock tower and the frontal portico were added in 1877 after a fire gave cause for major repairs.

Van Buren is one of the oldest cities in Arkansas, originally called Phillips Landing after its first settler, Thomas Phillips, who arrived in 1818. The town incorporated in 1842, taking the name of President Andrew Jackson’s secretary of state, Martin Van Buren.

The Albert Pike School Museum was founded June 15, 1950, and donated to Crawford County by Mrs. Allen (Maude) Henderson. Restoration in 1998 was accomplished by Van Buren Masonic Lodge No. 6 and Cedar Masonic Lodge No. 762. The neighboring city of Fort Smith has an elementary school named for Albert Pike (v2.0), hence the name of this cache.
