Geocache Description:

Thanks to the Hollis Dairy and all Farmers in our area.  How lucky we are to have farmers in our lives.

Dairy Farming

When researching a new area to place a cache, I looked at interesting locations in my hometown that I wanted to know more about.  According to Manta.com,” Hollis Dairy in Newton, AL is a private company categorized under Milk-Condensed Evaporated Etc. Our records show it was established in 1965 and incorporated in Alabama.”

While trying to figure out what to name this cache and the info to list, I discovered something I didn’t know about dairy farming or at least never thought of.  Not only do dairy farmers raise cattle to produce milk, butter, cheese, etc., but also to make evaporated and condensed milk.
According to Wikipedia, “Evaporated milk is fresh, homogenized milk from which 60 percent of the water has been removed. After the water has been removed, the product is chilled, stabilized, packaged and sterilized. It is commercially sterilized at 240-245 °F (115-118 °C) for 15 minutes. A slightly caramelized flavor results from the high heat process, and it is slightly darker in color than fresh milk. The evaporation process also concentrates the nutrients and the food energy. Thus, for the same weight, undiluted evaporated milk contains more food energy than fresh milk.

This cache is located about 15 feet from the dirt road’s edge.  You are looking for a well camo’d  peanut butter jar with plenty of room for trackables.  Enjoy the hunt.
