Cliff City places boaters on the relatively large, open waters of the lower Chester River. Scenery on this stretch of water is characterized by low-lying farm fields, many of which date back to the 18th century. On calm days, paddlers may want to cross the river and explore the sandy beaches of Spaniard’s Neck and Conquest Beach, one of the most popular swimming areas on the river. That said, be very aware of speedboat traffic in the main channel if you attempt to make this crossing in a canoe or kayak. Paddlers in particular should be aware that this area is exposed to high winds. Boaters can use Cliff City as a staging area to explore Langford Creek, whose mouth is 2 miles downstream from the landing on the Kent County side of the river, or the Corsica River, whose entrance is 2 miles downstream on the Queen Anne’s side.
