Geocache Description:

Log sheet only, bring a pen.  A micro sized cache hidden next to a restored tidal wetland.

The Tidal Wetlands cache is hidden along rte 385 in Athens.  There is a small fenced in area with an info sign here.  The tidal wetlands here was created by the NY State Dept. of Transportation to replace the tidal wetland that was filled in long ago.  Between 1920 and 1965 it is estimated that almost 2/3 of the Hudson's wetlands were lost due to dredging and filling.  Wetlands are vital nesting and feeding areas for birds, nurseries for small fish and crabs, and they benefit people too by buffering property from flood and storm damage.  This restored wetland will take years to reach its full potential, but the process has begun.

The Hudson is a tidal river.  Here in Athens it is tidally influenced fresh water.  In response to the tides, the wetland plants grow in distinct zones.  Tides submerge lower parts of a marsh and plants can endure being underwater for much of the time.   Cattails grow in higher areas when tidal flooding is shallow.  And shrubs grow in the highest areas where only the highest tides reach.
