Geocache Description:

A clear plastic tupperware container placed by the Pointe Riche Lighthouse.  Jenn loves lighthouses, and this lighthouse is not only in Milton's hometown, but it has a unique story of it's own.  This story has been included in the cache, as there is nothing posted at the lighthouse.  You will pass the museum on the way, it includes interesting artifacts about the people of the area before our time.

The original hexagonal Pointe Riche Lighthouse was built by the Canadian Government in 1871, measuring 40' from base to vane.  The original lighthouse was destroyed by fire on August 15, 1890.  There was a difference in opinion, but it was decided to rebuild the lighthouse.  The present octagonal lighthouse, measuring 58' from base to vane, was rebuilt in 1892 by Daniel McDonald of Pictou, Nova Scotia who had the lowest tender of $1.750, & was placed in operation on October 20, 1892.
When a Frensel Lens was planned to be installed it was decided that a concrete foundation was necessary.  With the new platform in place, the old latern was removed & the new 100,000 candlepower light was put into place in 1908, this work was completed for a cost of $8,170.
A new keeper's building was also built in 1908, but it burned down in 1998, leaving the foundation you see South of the lighthouse.  The lighthouse is still in operation today, although it is missing it's jewel-like Frensel lens, a modern beacon produces a white flash every 5 seconds.
This area overlooks Ingornchoix Bay to the South and St. John Bay to the North.
The Pointe Riche Lighthouse was declared a Recognized Federal Heritage Building in 1991, and is owned by the Canadian Coast Guard.
The cache includes a FTF of a Newfie shotglass, a Parks Canada Loonie, a NL keychain, and a FTF Certificate.  We tried to include smething for everyone in this cache.  The original contents were a NL Bookmark, NL Pins, Canada pencil, Emergency Candle, Stickers, Nametag, Hair Buckles, Bouncy Ball, 3 Dinkies, Erasers, Sharpening Stone, Bungee Cord, Padlock, Playing Cards, Salmon Flies, Guitar Pick, Modeling Clay, Bag Clip, & 2 Headbands.
We hope you enjoy the cache!
