An enjoyable walk from the harbour mouth along the shore at Thurso East
Lady Janet’s seat is listed as a Folly and is associated with the nearby Thurso Castle.
It is a small tower base, situated on a small promontory or rock on the low cliffs at Thurso East.
Thurso Castle was the home to the old Earls of Caithness. It was originally a 12th century earthwork fortress, founded by the Norse Earls at the mouth of Thor’s River. In the mid 17th century, George, Earl of Caithness founded a stone tower house on the site of the earlier fortification. In the late 19th century, Sir Tollemache Sinclair absorbed the tower in the construction of a Scottish baronial mansion house. Following a fire, the castle was partially demolished in 1952, and all that remains now is a roofless shell with no trace of the original castle.
The remaining tower stands on the edge of the beach close to the flat sandstone reefs which make up the World Class Surfing Beach at Thurso East. The cache is not hidden in the tower but about 200m along the shore from Lady Janet’s seat.
Parking for Thurso East is at the end of Sir Archibald Road, the cache is hidden about 800m from the car park. First left turn on the A836, Castletown Road from the traffic lights on the A9.
A narrow footpath follows the shore line past the remains of the castle. From this path you can get a superb view of the surfers enjoying the excellent surfing conditions on the reef. The path continues along the coast past a series of farm buildings.
Although the cliffs aren’t high here, care should be taken as the ground is uneven. The seat is reached about 400m beyond the farm.
