Geocache Description:

The cache is a small clear plastic container located in the Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site. This is a nice easy walk along the Iwetemlaykin trail that includes views of the Wallowa Mountains and ends at Knight's Pond. You may even see a fox as they tend to frequent this area. The original cache was abducted so I replaced with a new container and picked out a new hiding spot.

The Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site is a 62-acre parcel of rolling grassland, set amidst the stunning backdrop of the Wallowa Mountains. The entire area is part of the ancestral homeland of the Nez Perce Tribe, and is a sacred place to the Nez Perce Tribe, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. "Iwetemlaykin" is the Nez Perce name for this area of the Wallowa Lake basin. Pronounced ee-weh-TEMM-lye-kinn, the name translates to "at the edge of the lake." The property is adjacent to a Nez Perce National Historical Park, site of Old Chief Joseph Grave site and Cemetery. To get to this cache go to the Iwetemlaykin State Heritage Site parking lot along the Wallowa Lake highway. From the parking lot take the trail all the way to Knight's Pond. This is an easy walk of about a half mile or so that has great views of the mountains. There is also a fox den nearby so keep your eye's open for wildlife. The cache container is just off the trail around the pond. FTF gets the 1963 Ben Franklin 50 cent piece. Original Contents of new container (11/28/14): bouncy ball, red dice, monster truck, CJD token, glass shoe, Steve Largent football card, Anakin Skywalker Star Wars card, globe key chain, teddy bear pin, star eraser and log book. Original Contents (9/6/2012): key chain, Chief Joseph Days token, green and yellow bouncy balls, glass marble, matchbox car, red dice, dinosaur, Star Wars cards (Epic Battle and Mace Windu), Seahawks action card and the 1963 Ben Franklin 50 cent piece.
