Many do not know of this event but Flight 102-17 is ranked as one of Nanaimo's biggest disasters.
On Oct 17 1951 a 'Canso A' CF-FOQ plane was enroute to Vancouver from The Queen Charlotte Islands. On that fateful evening the Canso somehow found its tragic demise on the edge of Mt Benson. 3 crew members and 20 passengers perished on impact. The wreckage was scattered for over 500 feet. Most of the wreckage has been carted off and collected by locals, but a few remnants do remain.
