Elz: We’ve decided to archive this series on its’ 12th birthday due to the waning popularity of caching in the countryside (especially in deep mud!). Many thanks to Hal-an-tow for continuously maintaining/replacing caches in this series when needed. Thanks to all the cachers over the years that have found our caches and enjoyed the route, cache containers and puzzles we set.

It’s a shame, but I’m thinking the true spirit of geocaching is slowly fizzling out, especially with puzzle caches where people just get the co-ords via social media 😟 So it’s time to archive and free up the area for anyone else that wants to use it.

Geocache Description:

This cache came about due to teamwork. One cacher was the feet, one was the brains (well, that is open to debate....) This area was a little short on caches, steeped in history and very pretty to walk through. We'd also had quite a few cache ideas so it was a perfect match. Some of these caches are easy to find, some are difficult and some have ingenious containers of all shapes and sizes.

Old Ingarsby is a Deserted Medieval Village (DMV) which has its origins at some point in the 9th or 10th century. The Domesday Book of 1086 reports 32 heads of households present. When the majority of the manor was granted to Leicester Abbey in 1352, a dozen families lived in the village. Desertion occurred in 1469 when the abbey enclosed the whole of the land and converted most of it to sheep and cattle pastures.

The whole site of about 400m x 250m is under rough pasture now, but the general layout of this deserted village is clearly traceable. The hollow of the main street follows the line of a footpath and many side lanes lead off with well-spaced house platforms and spaces for adjoining gardens and orchards. The remaining Ingarsby Old Hall was originally moated on three sides and the oldest fabric dates to the 1540s in the east range.

This cache is one of a series around the area and may contain a part of the opening instructions and a letter to help calculate the co-ordinates of the bonus cache GC3WDW2 You have got to be kidding Please do not remove this information – take a note of it and leave it for the next cacher to find.

Parts of the walk will be very muddy in wet weather. Check the related web page link just above the co-ords for a very useful map which shows the route you need to take (parts of two different Parish Rambles). Most of the rights of way are well indicated by yellow marker posts, but there are a few places where the geographically challenged may go astray (don't ask how hal-an-tow knows this ...)

Please see the additional waypoints for recommended parking spots. Ideally follow the route anticlockwise from Ingarsby, so that you get the uphill part over early, and finish the walk with an easy downhill stretch.

Caching dogs are going to encounter a few stiles with metal mesh blocking their route under or through on the East and North sides of the walk. At the time of setting there are lambing sheep in some fields too - even the best behaved dog must be kept on a lead in those circumstances.
