Geocache Description:

This is number 27 in a series of caches dedicated to my two favorite hobbies. Geocaching and Birding. Both require you to go get out of the house and do some walking. While out geocaching I easily get distracted by birds that I encounter, but it makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Each of these caches are placed in an area where there is a heavy concentration of birds or a certain species of birds that I think people would enjoy learning more about and seeing first-handed. So if you have a pair of binoculars, bring them along with your pen for some close up views.

This cache is located at the Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center. This is a great place for a hike or to go birding.  Their information center has a great viewing post inside with a lot of feeders that allow for upclose observation of the birds.  The trails posted hours are Tues-Sun 9AM-5PM. This cache is located off the highway and not in the Center, so you may grab this cache at anytime, but to get the full effect of this area, come during the day.

This cache is dedicated to one of the most beautiful birds, that can be seen here during the correct time of the year: the Painted Bunting.

With bright blue, green, and red plumage, the breeding male Painted Bunting is one of the continent's most gaudily colorful birds.

Male Description
Painted Bunting
Head and nape blue. Back shiny green. Rump, throat, chest, flanks, belly, and undertail coverts red. Eyering red. Wings and tail dark gray.

Female Description
Painted Bunting ( Passerina ciris )
Crown, nape, and back rather bright olive-green. Throat, chest, and belly yellow-green. Head may show some blue feathers.

Male Painted Buntings are highly territorial and aggressive toward each other. Fights between males, which include pecking, beating with wings, and grappling, sometimes result in death.

Congratz to fe for the FTF!
