Cache is a small plastic, screw-top container just off the parking area on butler Pond Rd.
Every town has its share of ghost stories and legends. A few that I remember from a kid were “The Hook hanging from the car door handle”, the “Hairy H-man” and Abigail West. The story about Abigail as I remember hearing it goes like this:
There was a young woman named Abigail West who lived on West Mountain. West Mountain as you may or may not know was named for the West family who owned the land, not because it is to the west of the Town of Queensbury. Abigail was a witch who would send her spirit out at night to dance in the moonlight while her physical body still lay in bed. One night while her spirit was roaming about in the woods, her house burned down and she was killed in the fire. More specifically, her body was burned but her spirit was still wandering in the woods with no physical body to return to. She now wanders and haunts the woods of West Mountain.
Now, I am not suggesting that Abigail West was indeed a witch, or that her ghost haunts this area. This is just the campfire story I remember hearing. A little research turned up some information that indicated Abigail was indeed a real person, married to William Barber West and they moved together to Queensbury in 1790. Abigail and William lived a modest life for the era, raising their six children on a farm near Butler Pond on the mountain that is now named after them. On Aug. 11, 1811, Abigail was struck by lightning and killed.
Rumors still abound about what happened to Abigail’s grave, and where her body (and her ghost?) is now. But that is another story…
