The Perfect Date
Gone Way Wrong

About 25 years ago a friend of mine told me this was a great place to take a date and view up these gorgeous hills and amazing scenery. So when I got the opportunity I took my girlfriend out for an afternoon drive in my dad's 1965 El Camino. After finding the dirt road that led up the hill, I realized I was in for more than I had planned, but I there was no turning back now.

The drive up was sure a bumpy ride but dad's El Camino managed the drive all the way to the top. We found a nice place to park, view the scenery and have a picnic lunch. The view from here, 3600 feet, is amazing and we could see miles and miles in all directions. There were so many places to explore, that before we knew it, daylight was falling on us. We had a wonderful date, but it was time to return to the car and head for home.

We gathered our things, and I began to drive around in search for the path that got us here. Soon I knew I was in trouble when all I could see around me was large rocks and trees, no road. I bumped around the rough terrain and smashed a headlight on a boulder. The only thing that ran through my head was 'Dad is going to KILL me!'

It was getting dark fast, and my girlfriend was getting nervous, and upset, and wanted nothing more than to be home. By this point I really can’t see where I am driving at all, but I found a narrow walking path, and decided to follow it with hopes of finding the road. As I made my way down the trail, it narrowed, and began to go downhill. Soon I found my brakes were going out. At this point I am praying to get the El Camino home in one piece.

Heading downhill, only one headlight, and failing breaks I knew the only good thing that could happen was to find the road to get us home. That’s when it happened all too fast. I found I was going down hill on loose gravel, with no way to stop. The trail turned right, and the last thing I remember from that night was a screaming voice as our ride went straight into a large rock with a bang.

On September 13th, 2012, I returned to the place I wrecked my dad’s car to find only parts of his prized El Camino remains. I placed this geocache near the wreckage to remember the day my date went south.

The above story is fiction. What is true is about 100 feet from cache there is a red vehicle that has wrecked. Not much is left of the car, but it can even be seen from satellite view. Check it out!
