Geocache Description:

A cache placed in the grounds of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, to remember the innocent cost of war

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
(Extract from the Laurence Binyon poem For The Fallen)

This is a series of caches designed to remind us of the sacrifice given by members of the armed forces not just in the two world wars but in all wars since, and those still being fought. NONE of the caches are placed on any of the memorial sites but at a respectful distance. There is a pay and display carpark at the other end of the precinct, and limited on street parking nearer the cache, but please DO NOT stop or park on the narrower section of Church Road, thankyou.

Most people remember those killed in action during times of war, the soldiers, sailors or airmen, but what about those killed as an act of war ? What about the Innocent Lives lost? We Will Remember Them.

At around 3.00 pm on Sunday 30th May 1943, the peace and tranquility of the St. Marychurch area of Torquay was shattered by German bombers. A direct hit on the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, completely destroying all but the tower. Children arriving for Sunday school were to be the main victims of this atrocity with numbers varying from report to report. A stone above the doorway further along the path from the cache states that 26 children and adults were killed, the most accurate figures i have managed to find are 21 children and 3 adults. There is a memorial in Torquay Cemetery to the children that were killed. Please take 5 minutes to visit it and remember those innocent lives so cruelly cut short.

On placing this cache contains 26 marbles (a favourite game for children of that era), one for each life lost. Please feel free to trade but may i respectfully request that trades are 1 for 1, so that we keep 26 items in the box, thank you. Also a gold nugget for the FTF.

Placed with the very kind permission of the church warders. Please show respect for the church property and those using it.
