Turning Basin Park -- over a hundred years ago, canal boats flocked to this area to unload and turn around. This cache will draw you into the park in search of a camo-colored mega bison tube big enough to hold geocoins.
My first cache in Mercer County! Bring your own pen (BYOP)! Congrats to NoahsDad on the FTF and the duo of Regifeathers and ashrager on the STF!
Turning Basin Park is a 9.8 acre municipal park built upon the site of what was once a thriving commercial area with two turning basins. Canal boats could turn around in either basin as well as unload. Most people now come to this park for access to the Delaware & Raritan Canal and its towpath trail. The municipal park features picnic facilities and a canoe launch.
A turning basin in a canal is a wider body of water, sometimes described as a land-locked harbor. Its purpose could be to allow long narrow barges to turn a sharp corner when moving forward . . . or to make a reverse turn to change direction . . . or to simply unload without blocking the canal.
The basin east of Alexander Road (behind the canoe rental place across the street from the park) can still be seen; the basin on the west side of Alexander Road (where this park is located) has been filled in.
