–––––––––––––––––––––––––

The war between the British and the two Dutch South African republics began on 11 October 1899 when the Boers declared war on the British.

At the request of the Imperial Government, which desired that a corps of seasoned bushmen, bold riders, and sharpshooters, should be enrolled, capable of successfully contending with a guerrilla enemy. The officers and men were to serve directly under the Imperial Government and be subject entirely to it. The period of service was limited to twelve months or the duration of the war.

Imperial Bushmen
General Order 16 (Victoria), 1900, notified that applications would be received from officers of the Forces and those who had previous military service as officers for appointment to this Contingent. Candidates were required to be capable horseman, and to have had a certain amount of bush experience.

The War lasted until the 31 May 1902 when Lord Kitchener and General Botha signed the peace  treaty know as the Peace of Vereeniging, which ended the war.

The monument was erected in honour of Farrier Edwin Charles Bawden, by the residents of Eldorado in the 1900's. The original memorial plaque is on the northern face of the Monument and a new brass plaque supplied by the RSL in 2004 faces west.

This site does not get visited very often and there is no marked walking trail. But once you get to the parking area it will be easy to work out how to get to the 1st way point. It is a 10 minute walk.

There is a Chirp beacon at waypoint one for those who have a Chirp receiver in their GPS, This will give you the information which will lead you to GZ.

For those who don't, you need to solve the following at waypoint one on the west facing plaque.

Bearing = ABC Deg(T)  Metres = DEF

A = How many times does the letter Q appear on the plaque.
B = Numbers of letters in the third word on the 9th line.
C = How many times does the word Australia appear.
D = The 1st digit that appears on the last line.
E = How many letters in the first word on the 7th line.
F = South Africa appears how many times.

From the marker / monument, project the waypoint and make your way to GZ, just 10 minutes away.
