Nothing like camping at the South Higgins Lake State Park! This geocache is located in a small hiking trail area between the east & west campgrounds. If you are not a registered camper & just visiting this area of the park, please use discression and stay away from the campsite lots and do not disturb the campers. This should be a fairly easy find, the cache is a medium sized rubbermaid container painted camouflage to blend into the surounding ground cover.
The South Higgins Lake State Park is one of the largest parks in Michigan, and is a very popular destination for thousands of summertime vacationers.
Historically speaking, the campground area of this park was once a part of the original homestead property of the Sharp family dating back to 1898. This section of land was 'given' back to the State of Michigan during the 1920's in exchange for land taxes owed- which in turn became the seed property that became the park. Adjacent properties were then purchased by the state to expand the parkland through several stages to what we know it today.
The area of the cache location, there are several remaining white pine stumps that were cut over 100 years ago during the lumbering era.
Camping in the park in the 1920's just after the park opened to the public.
The park campground in 1928.
Camping at 'South State' in 1966!
The first finder will find a nice traveling surprise inside!
