The Comboyne plateau was formerly logged extensively and used for dairying. Potatoes grew very well in the rich volcanic soil with a high elevation. Nowadays there are many fewer dairy farms but the area is used for a mix of hortoculture including avocados, blueberries, chinese gooseberries and of course potatoes mostly protected from the westerly winds by clumping bamboo which grows tall and straight.
This Nature Reserve was gazetted in 1904 with 74 hectares which was increased to 396 hectares in 2002. The reserve is a remnant of the former rainforest which covered the Comboyne plateau but was mainly cleared for dairy farming by the early settlers. There is a beautiful easy walk of 1.7 k to a viewing platform of the Rawson Falls and a further 1 k to the plunge pools below the falls.
The cache is beside the road on the way into the parking area but it is well worth taking the extra time to at least walk to the viewing platform.
