About the cache
Replacing a cache close to this location that was muggled, this is a magnetic screw top micro that contains only a log and pencil. You'll need to be stealthy!
This cache can be done as a stand alone but it is best done as part of a walk along the canal where there are many caches placed on the tow path. It is an excellent point to take a break from your walk and stop off for refreshment in the town centre.
About the Bridge
The Britannia Street Footbridge is a cable-stayed shared pedestrian and cyclist bridge that links the canal and surrounding residential area with Bingley town centre. It is constructed from steel and rests on a stone base. It's elegance and novelty derives from the leaning square upright that tapers to a point. It crosses over the A650 Bingley Relief Road and was opened in January 2004. It replaced a previous footbridge at the location that had to be demolished when the relief road was constructed and is considerably wider than its predecessor. There is an iron bollard at the town centre end that is the only surviving element of the old bridge.
About Bingley
Bingley is an ancient market town. It was established by the Saxons on a ford on the River Aire. Following the Norman conquest, it is mentioned in the Domesday Book. In medieval times Bingley was the most significant town in the area having a population larger than Leeds, Bradford or Halifax. Like so many towns it prospered as a result of industrialisation and then declined as the industry moved overseas. Following the construction of the relief road and the redevelopment of the mills and canal area, it became one of the more desirable residential areas for those who commute to Leeds and Bradford.
Wheelchair access
This is a modern bridge and is therefore wheelchair accessible. The cache had to be placed low down so you may need assistance retrieving it.
Access from the canal
If you are walking or cycling along the canal, the path to the bridge is clearly signposted and will take you on only a very short deviation from your route.
Travel by car
There is free on road parking a short distance away or you can use the pay & display parking close to the station and shopping precinct.
Public transport
The cache is within a short walk of Bingley Railway Station or there are several buses that stop in Bingley.
