Site of the old Martensen Family Homestead. Placed with permission from the State of Oregon.Forestry Department. Parking available nearby. This is a busy highway, so please watch the kids & pets!
Joe and Clara Martensen homesteaded this location in the early 1920's. Coming from the Dakotas in a wagon with little or nothing to start. Raising their 5 children, and surviving the Great Depression and Tillamook Burn. Aftter the Burn, they worked in the logging camps. Clara as a cook, and Joe as a logger. Times were tough but they survived.
They built the Buckhorn Cafe, which stood for many, many years and served as a resting spot for weary travelers going from Tillamook to Portland. Joe grew vegetables in his garden, and Clara cooked up some of the best meals in the Northwest! Venison was a specialty, they raised their own.
The property was deeded to the State of Oregon after their death, and the highway widened. Part of the old foundation remains. The cache is place nearby in their honor by myself (Ginny- grand daughter), and Sadies Party (Tana-Great Grand daughter) of Joe and Clara.
We hope you enjoy this cache, and give some thought to all the pioneers that made our country great!
