Geocache Description:

Over the past couple of years, I've done a series of geocaches that were dedicated to one of my favorite rock bands, the Grateful Dead (or should I say "dead-icated"?). But the Dead aren't strictly the only group that I listen to with any regularity. I've been a fan of the Beach Boys since the early '60's. So I thought, why not a series for that group as well (especially since they are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year). Now they played Portland quite a few times, but only in a couple of places (and those sites already have Grateful Dead caches). So this series won't be for where they played, but for some of the songs that they wrote and sang, and the messages the songs contain.

The Beach Boys were most popular for their sun, surf, car songs (with an occassional ballad tossed in), and for the Four Freshman-inspired harmonies that was their trademark vocal signature. They were at one time the most popular rock'n'roll group in America, knocking the Beatles off the top of the charts with their first #1 hit record, "I Get Around". More recently, they have just finished a 70 city world tour celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band. The core group was comprised of three brothers, a cousin, and a high school classmate. Though they've had high times and low times over the years, the sound they produce is still instantly recognizable when a song comes on the radio.

"Well she got her daddy's car
And she cruised through the hamburger stand now;
Seems she forgot all about the library
Like she told her old man now;
And with the radio blasting
Goes cruising just as fast as she can now."

Over the years the Beach Boys would vary the songs they included in their live shows. They would start with a "no huddle" set list, rolling off 6-7 hits with no break. Then a few of the cars songs ("hot-wiring the hot rods"), a couple of slow songs, then the "fun in the sun surf" medley, and close with their biggest hits. If they had a new song (which happened rarely), they'd toss it in somewhere. But they always closed with the same song, and in all the shows I saw, it was a great sing-a-long that sent the audience out singing. If you visit the related web page link, you'll see that energy from their 1980 show in Knebworth, England. (This was the last time that all the founding members of the band were on stage at the same time). That song is the subject of this geocache.

The song was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love about Shirley Johnson England, the daughter of the owner (Howard D Johnson) of radio station KNAK in Salt Lake City, Utah (not to be confused with the call letters now assigned to a station in Delta, Utah) where she worked as a teenager. She borrowed her father's Ford Thunderbird to study at the library at the University of Utah. While at the library she met up with some friends, went to a hamburger stand, and ended up at the drive-in movies. When her father found out, he took the car away. The next day she was at the radio station complaining about it to the staff while The Beach Boys were visiting and they were inspired to write this song.

"Well you knew all along
That your dad was gettin' wise to you now;
And since he took your set of keys
You've been thinking that your fun is all through now;
But you can come along with me
Cause we gotta a lot of things to do now"

The cache is located in a spot that geocachers are familiar with. It is a container that is a new variation on one that geocachers are familiar with, and I would appreciate any and all feedback. Cache is log only, so please bring the writing instrument of your choice. Parking is available near GZ, but please obey all parking regulations, and do not block any private drives. Above all, be safe out there.

"And we'll have fun fun fun now that daddy took the t-bird away
(Fun fun fun now that daddy took the t-bird away)
And we'll have fun fun fun now that daddy took the t-bird away
(Fun fun fun now that daddy took the t-bird away) "
