Geocache Description:

Over the past couple of years, I've done a series of geocaches that were dedicated to one of my favorite rock bands, the Grateful Dead (or should I say "dead-icated"?). But the Dead aren't strictly the only group that I listen to with any regularity. I've been a fan of the Beach Boys since the early '60's. So I thought, why not a series for that group as well (especially since they are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year). Now they played Portland quite a few times, but only in a couple of places (and those sites already have Grateful Dead caches). So this series won't be for where they played, but for some of the songs that they wrote and sang, and the messages the songs contain.

The Beach Boys were most popular for their sun, surf, car songs (with an occasional ballad tossed in), and for the Four Freshman-inspired harmonies that was their trademark vocal signature. They were at one time the most popular rock'n'roll group in America, knocking the Beatles off the top of the charts with their first #1 hit record, "I Get Around". More recently, they have just finished a 70 city world tour celebrating their 50th anniversary as a band. The core group was comprised of three brothers, a cousin, and a high school classmate. Though they've had high times and low times over the years, the sound they produce is still instantly recognizable when a song comes on the radio.

"We've been friends
Now for so many years
We've been together through
The good times and the tears"

If the Beach Boys were painters, the song this cache is dedicated to would be from their blue period. After success after success, society changed, and their type of music went out of fashion. They continued to write, and tour, but the successes just weren't there. "Friends" is a song written by Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine. It was released on their 1968 album Friends. It was also released as a single, with the B-side of the single being "Little Bird". The single peaked at #47 in the U.S. and #25 in the U.K. The song was recorded in March 1968. Brian once stated, "The cut 'Friends' was, in my opinion, a good way to keep waltzes alive. Carl had sung...before and now he spearheaded this cut with a heavy vocal performance." If you click on the related web page link at the top of the description, you will see the original promotional film for this song.

"And days I was down
You would help me
Get out of my hole
Let's be friends
Let's be friends
Let's be friends"

The cache is one that is familiar to all geocachers, in a location that is familiar to all as well. Parking is available within 10 feet of GZ. Cache is a log only with a Rite-as-Rain log sheet, so bring the writing instrument of your choice. Please replace as found.

I'm dedicating this cache to some of my good geo-buddies that have helped me through some tough times lately. They know who they are so I won't embarrass them here (well, maybe just a little...LET'S GO, YANKEES!!). They don't know how much they've helped, and how grateful I am. They truly are "Friends".
